Gillingham School Students Join International River of Hope Climate Art Project
Students from Gillingham School played a key role in the inspiring finale of the River of Hope project in Dorset, where more than 60 colourful flags created by young people were unveiled to highlight the importance of protecting rivers and tackling climate change.
The international River of Hope initiative encouraged students to explore their local waterways, learn about the impact of the climate crisis, and express their hopes for the future through art. Working alongside professional artists, participants transformed their research and reflections into striking flag designs that celebrated both their local environment and their vision for a more sustainable world.
In Dorset, visual artist Heidi Steller and poet Matt West worked with students from Gillingham School, Queen Elizabeth School (Wimborne), The Burgate School (Fordingbridge), Ringwood School, Twynham School and The Grange School (Christchurch). Their creative work was exhibited alongside contributions from Tees Valley, Devon, Newham, Norfolk and Ethiopia, with a specially commissioned soundtrack by Dorset rapper and producer Isaiah Dreads.
Running from 2023 to 2025, the River of Hope project brought together schools across seven regions of the UK, as well as partner communities in France and Ethiopia. The programme gave thousands of young people the opportunity to explore environmental issues, connect with their local rivers, and share messages of hope through collaborative art.
The Dorset finale celebrated the creativity, environmental awareness and global collaboration of the students involved, demonstrating how young people can inspire positive conversations about climate action and the future of our planet.
