Sixth Form Enrichment Programme

Sixth Form Enrichment

At Gillingham School our goal is to provide top quality education and opportunities for all our students. Alongside our ‘Study for Success’ agenda, which focuses on developing the habits and revision skills necessary to achieve the best possible exam grades. We also run a leadership and enrichment programme to broaden the opportunities available to our students. This is in recognition both of the impact of Covid 19 on the lives of our young people in the last few years, and due to the growing demand from employers, apprenticeship providers and universities for interpersonal skills and a wider sense of social responsibility. Examples of these skills include teamwork, communication, problem solving and critical thinking, alongside developing political, social and cultural awareness, encouraging our students to engage with wider society in a meaningful and fulfilling way. The programme is designed to go beyond the realms of the examined curriculum and stimulate students’ interests, in both an academic and practical sense.

Leadership Roles

To assist in the development of these skills, we have created a range of leadership and team based roles for the Sixth Form, designed to build a sense of community and encourage the older students to act as role models to the rest of the school. Students will select roles that interest them, and go through an application process as part of this. They will be provided with support and training to build their confidence and skills.

The roles have been developed to support the three strands of our school award system and can be divided in to:

·Learning which includes roles such as:  Subject Support– attached to a subject of their choosing and working within the department to undertake roles such as classroom assisting, running a lunchtime club, producing display materials for the department or mentoring individual students

·Community: Lunchtime Supervisors  – Supporting the existing ‘Red Coats’ with managing the behaviour of lower school students – this work experience will contribute to applications for paid Red Coat positions in Year 13.

· Skill: Tutor Support – attached to the lower school tutor groups, joining the tutor on 2-3 registration periods a week to read to the tutor groups, work with individual students, run quizzes, lead charity events and organise termly house events.

As well as a range of other opportunities.

Alongside the leadership programme we offer the opportunity for School Councillors – to act as Cultural Architects who help to shape and develop the moral, social and cultural awareness of our students and work with the lower school council on relevant projects. The Council is very much student led with a link member of the Sixth Form Team to give advice but the projects they focus on are chosen by and developed by themselves giving you the opportunity to make the changes you want to see in our school.
