From September 2025, our school will be using Mobile Phone Pouches make our school phone free in Years 7-11
The use of lockable pouches is becoming increasingly common in schools. This has allowed for studies to take place on their impact. From a survey of 900 schools, this approach has been found to significantly enhance academic performance, student behaviour, student engagement and well-being. These will not only benefit our students whilst in school, but also help them develop good habits for phone use as they become adults.
Parents can decide how they want to manage their child’s in-school phone use:
- RECOMMENDED: Purchase of a pouch through school will be required for students to store their phone and any other smart devices securely during the school day. Your child will collect this on the first day in school and will be required to use it every day.
- FOR STUDENTS WHO DO NOT BRING PHONES TO SCHOOL: Parent/carer to sign a home-school agreement which confirms this arrangement. Your child will be provided with an exemption card on the first day of school and must have it in school every day – they should keep it in their pencil case so it is always on hand.
It is each student’s responsibility to bring their pouch with them to school every day and keep it in good working condition. If they have opted out of the scheme, they must leave their phone at home but bring in their exception card every day (for example it could be stored in their pencil case)
For Year 12-13
Students are being prepared for adulthood and are encouraged to develop skills of self-regulation, which includes their use of mobile phones. The policy for the Sixth Form will be as follows:
- Option of purchasing a pouch is available for all students
- Students are not allowed to access their phone in the school with the exception of the following areas: study centres and indoor area of the 6th Form canteen
- When not in these areas the phone must be stored securely in their bags
- No earbuds or other forms of headphones allowed outside of these areas unless for medical need
