Welcome from the Headteacher

A Welcome from the Headteacher

A very warm welcome to the Gillingham School website.

Welcome to the website of Gillingham School in North Dorset, in the heart of the beautiful Blackmore Vale. Founded by benefactors in 1516, we are proud of the school’s long history, and privileged to offer a quality and enjoyable educational experience open to all young people from the town of Gillingham and its surrounding villages – and indeed to a number of students from further afield in Dorset, Wiltshire and Somerset.

At Gillingham School we recognise that children have many abilities, talents and personalities and that they learn in many different ways. We aim to develop their abilities, raise their expectations and provide the support necessary for success, by offering a wide range of experiences to our students both in and out of the classroom.

The school motto is ‘docendo discimus’, which means ‘through teaching we learn’. This recognises that learning is a shared, lifelong process, and that the partnership between students, teachers and parents is vitally important in ensuring that all students aspire to achieve the best possible chances for their future.

Gillingham is also a friendly school, characterised by good behaviour, respect towards others and enthusiasm for new experiences – this positive ethos has been a feature here for many years and we remain committed to sustaining this into the future.

It is our privilege as teachers to welcome children into our school, watch them learn, grow, develop and mature into the young adults who leave us to become the next generation of our community and our country. It is a delight when we meet a former student some years later, to hear how they have progressed and see what they have become.

I was delighted to have been appointed as Headteacher in September 2017. The unique and very special ethos that exists at Gillingham immediately resonated with me and I am delighted to be part of the school. Gillingham is a happy school: we want our children to feel safe, secure and happy at our school. Partnerships are very important and our school has a history of working with all members of our community in order to provide the best possible education. This is something we pride ourselves on.

Finally, whether you are a current student or parent, a former student or colleague, whether you are considering applying to join us (as staff or student), an interested member of the community, or a professional in education elsewhere, we hope you find our website enjoyable and informative. We look forward to welcoming you to our school.
